The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo
was a chivalric order of crazy theatre kids formed in 1972 by Sir Richard Elfman, older brother of member Sir Danny Elfman. With way too many members, the band performed a variety of pre-1950s genres incorporating zany theatrics such as clown makeup and stage props into their live acts.
When Richard's interest shifted away from the troupe, he passed his leadership to singer / songwriter / trombonist / violinist / junior ginger Danny Elfman in 1976. That same year, the troupe released their single "You Got Your Baby Back", a doo-wop song about young heiress Patty Hearst's misunderstood terroristic antics.
By the late '70s the group had integrated styles such as ska and punk to their songs and in 1978 they made the soundtrack for Richard's movie, The Forbidden Zone. In 1979, Danny got sick of having to lug all that theatre equipment around and downsized the troupe's size and name, forming the new rock band Oingo Boingo.
Some of the band's performances were recorded alongside demos from 1974 to 1979 all of which are available on the internet. Songs performed by The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo include:
You Got Your Baby Back
Ballad Of The Caveman
Nuclear Babies
Because Of You
Cruisin'
Marching In Time
Make It Right
I Must Be Dreaming
I'm Afraid
Gotta Get Out
The following songs would later be a part of Oingo Boingo's discography:
