In 1977 Richard Elfman, former member of The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo, began to work on a musical called The Hercules Family. This movie would be based on the live acts of his former troupe, featuring its members and the band's iconic absurdism and theatrics. The story would be written by Richard and his friend Matthew Bright.
As production went on, the project got the name "Forbidden Zone" from the titular dimension hidden in the protagonist's house. The Mystic Knights made the soundtrack and helped with the sets and funding. Lead singer Danny Elfman appears as a sharp-dressed Satan, with other Mystic Knights as his minions. The movie was shot in black and white and colorized in 2008.
Production was very amateurish and largely funded by the actors. Writer Matthew Bright somehow cracked his skull on set (which might explain the plot). In the end, Richard went bankrupt and lost his house but managed to finish the movie in 1980. It premiered in theatres across L.A. in March and quickly gained a considerable cult following.
The movie itself is a big piece of shit shining example of creative independent filmmaking, considered by no one many to be a masterpiece of the seventh art. The theme song was later released on Oingo Boingo's Demo EP.
