"We are mutants but we just don't care," reads the blurb for the Oingos on Rhino Records' L.A. In compilation. I beg to differ; they worked hard to sound like this—just to the right of Devo, with less artiness and more craft—but they have nothing to say. The EP opens with "Only a Lad," about a Johnny who's rotten to the core but is always pardoned for being a product of his environment. The Oingos' judgment is "I hope you fry." Closing the EP is "I'm So Bad," which takes the part of a nut who can't help attacking people at night. Contradictions? You betcha! In between are two tracks with lots of style and almost no content: "Violent Love" is moon/June for those who discovered punk yesterday, and "Ain't This the Life" a list of what the ultra-rich have and do. Listen, boys, if you admit you're pretty vacant up front—and have the musical know-how to do it in style—people will love you for it. Either get smarter (conceptually) or dumber (lyrically); that's how Devo got where they are(n't) today.
